2.1 Before You Build, Plan It Right

Before You Build, Plan It Right

A clear plan saves hours of debugging later

Every great Skill begins with understanding what problem it solves, who uses it, and what a good output looks like. A clear plan saves hours of debugging later.

Three Skill Categories

Content Generation

Creating documents, emails, reports, blog posts, marketing copy. The most common category of Skills.

Code Workflows

Testing, refactoring, CI pipelines, code review, deployment scripts. Technical automation.

Analysis and Research

Data parsing, summarization, competitive analysis, market research. Knowledge extraction.

Knowing your category helps you choose the right structure and level of complexity for your Skill.

Planning Questions

What task do you repeat frequently?
Who is the primary user of this Skill?
What does the ideal output look like?
What inputs does Claude need from the user?
What external tools or data sources are involved?

Start Simple

Begin with the simplest version of your Skill. You can always add complexity later. A focused Skill that does one thing well is better than a complex Skill that does many things poorly.

Planning Principle

Good planning prevents bad Skills. The time invested in planning pays off exponentially during execution. Know your category, define your use case, and start simple.
