Section 1 — Lesson 1

What Is Claude AI?

Meet the AI assistant built from the ground up around safety, honesty, and advanced reasoning — and learn why it is rapidly becoming the tool of choice for professionals.

Introducing Claude by Anthropic

Claude is an AI assistant created by Anthropic, a company founded in 2021 by former senior researchers from OpenAI — including Dario and Daniela Amodei. Anthropic’s mission statement is unusually direct for a Silicon Valley company: they exist to build AI that is safe, beneficial, and understandable. That philosophy is not a marketing slogan — it is baked into every layer of how Claude is designed, trained, and deployed.

Unlike many AI products that raced to market with speed as the primary goal, Claude was built with a safety-first architecture from day one. The result is an assistant that is remarkably capable at complex reasoning, writing, analysis, and code — while being significantly less likely to produce harmful, misleading, or fabricated content. If you have ever been frustrated by an AI that confidently makes things up, Claude’s approach will feel like a breath of fresh air.

Constitutional AI — The Secret Sauce

The core innovation behind Claude is a technique called Constitutional AI (CAI). Instead of relying solely on human reviewers to flag bad outputs (the standard approach used by most AI labs), Anthropic gives Claude a written constitution — a set of principles that the model uses to self-evaluate and self-correct its own responses during training.

Think of it this way: most AI models learn by being told “this answer was good” or “this answer was bad” by thousands of human contractors. Constitutional AI adds a layer where the model itself asks: “Does my answer follow my principles? Is it honest? Is it harmful? Could it be misunderstood?” — and then revises its response before it ever reaches you. This approach produces an assistant that is more thoughtful, more nuanced, and far less likely to confidently state something false.

💡 Key Insight
Constitutional AI means Claude does not just generate text — it reasons about whether that text is helpful, honest, and harmless before presenting it to you. This is why Claude is significantly less likely to hallucinate or produce dangerous instructions compared to competitors.

The Claude Model Family: Opus, Sonnet, Haiku

As of 2025, Anthropic offers three tiers of Claude models, each optimized for different use cases and budgets. Understanding these tiers is essential for using Claude effectively, because choosing the right model for the task can save you time, money, and frustration.

Opus
Most Capable

The flagship model — best for complex reasoning, long documents, nuanced writing, and multi-step research. Slower and more expensive, but produces the highest-quality output. Ideal for professional work where accuracy matters most.

Sonnet
Balanced

The everyday workhorse — excellent balance of capability, speed, and cost. Great for most tasks: writing, coding, analysis, brainstorming. This is the model most people will use for daily work and the default on claude.ai.

Haiku
Fast & Affordable

The speed demon — optimized for quick tasks where low latency and low cost matter. Perfect for classification, simple Q&A, summarization, and high-volume API applications. Impressively capable for its size.

The current generation is the Claude 4 family, with Claude 4.5 and 4.6 representing the latest releases. Each new version brings improvements in reasoning, instruction following, code generation, and factual accuracy. Anthropic typically releases all three tiers (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku) for each generation, so you always have the right tool for the job.

Claude vs. the Competition

The AI assistant market in 2025 is crowded. ChatGPT by OpenAI, Gemini by Google, Microsoft Copilot, and several others are all competing for your attention. So where does Claude fit in, and why should you care?

ChatGPT by OpenAI is the most well-known AI assistant and has the largest ecosystem of plugins and integrations. It excels at general-purpose tasks and has strong image generation capabilities. However, it is more prone to hallucinations — confidently presenting false information as fact — especially on niche or recent topics.

Gemini by Google has the advantage of deep integration with Google Search, Gmail, and the broader Google ecosystem. Its context window is enormous (over one million tokens in the largest version), making it excellent for processing very large documents. However, its reasoning on complex multi-step problems tends to be less reliable than Claude’s.

Microsoft Copilot is tightly integrated into the Microsoft 365 suite and the Visual Studio Code editor. It is excellent for developers who live inside the Microsoft ecosystem but less versatile as a standalone reasoning and writing assistant.

Claude’s edge is in thoughtfulness and depth. When you give Claude a complex, ambiguous problem — a legal analysis, a nuanced business strategy, a multi-file codebase review, a 100-page document to summarize — it consistently produces more careful, structured, and accurate output than its competitors. It is also the most honest: when Claude does not know something, it says so rather than making something up.

⚠️ Important Note
No AI assistant is perfect. Claude can still make mistakes, misunderstand context, or produce incorrect information. The advantage of Constitutional AI is that these errors are less frequent and less confidently stated — but you should always verify critical information regardless of which AI tool you use.

Where Can You Use Claude?

Claude is available through several interfaces, each designed for different workflows:

  • claude.ai — The web interface. Free tier available, Pro subscription ($20/month) for higher limits and access to Opus. This is where most people start.
  • Claude mobile app — Available on iOS and Android. Same capabilities as the web, optimized for on-the-go use.
  • Claude API — For developers building applications. Pay per token, with access to all model tiers. Powers thousands of products behind the scenes.
  • Claude Code — A CLI tool for developers that gives Claude direct access to your codebase, terminal, and file system. Incredibly powerful for software development.
  • Third-party integrations — Claude is available inside tools like Cursor, Amazon Bedrock, and dozens of other platforms.
