Introduction: From Plugins to MCP Servers

From Plugins to MCP Servers

Welcome to the Build Your Own MCP Server course

In the previous course — Claude Plugins: Automate Your Business Processes — you learned how to create plugins with skills, commands, and MCP configurations. You discovered that plugins are powerful instruction sets that tell Claude what to do and how to do it.

But there was one piece we only touched on briefly: MCP servers. In this follow-up course, we will build them from scratch.

What This Course Covers

Section 1: Why MCP Servers

Understand why you need MCP servers and how they fit into the plugin architecture you already know.

Section 2: Build from Scratch

Create your first MCP server step-by-step in TypeScript or Python, register tools, and connect it to Claude Code.

Section 3: Real-World Use Cases

Connect to REST APIs, databases, and deploy your server as part of a complete plugin ecosystem.

What You Will Achieve

By the end, you will have a working MCP server that connects Claude to your own data and systems. No more blind automation — Claude will see your live data and act on it intelligently.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with concepts from the Claude Plugins course — skills, commands, and basic plugin structure
Basic knowledge of TypeScript or Python (helpful but not required)
A computer with Claude Code or Claude Desktop installed

Ready to Build?

This course takes you from understanding MCP architecture to deploying production-ready servers. Each section builds on the previous one, so follow them in order. Let us get started!
